BMedSc(Melb) MBBS(Qld) FRACP FRCPAClinical HaematologistDr Trevor Olsen has dedicated an unprecedented amount of his career to clinical practice and the development of ongoing patient support in the field of Haematology and Oncology. In 1988 Dr Olsen along with Dr Paul Eliadis and Dr Ian Bunce established the Haematology and Oncology Clinics of Australasia (HOCA). Dr Olsen completed his undergraduate training at the University of Queensland in December 1963 and went on to commence work in Haematology at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne in 1966. Following a period as a research fellow where he undertook original research on megakaryocyte proliferation and established techniques of staining and quantitation of megakaryocyte numbers from rat bone marrow, Dr Olsen was appointed to the Royal Brisbane Hospital as its first clinical haematologist and was instrumental in establishing the inpatient and outpatient departments of clinical haematology. After returning to Melbourne briefly Dr Olsen was then appointed as the first Clinical Haematologist/Oncologist to the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Brisbane during which time he helped to establish both the Haematology/Oncology Unit and a specific lymphoma clinic in conjunction with the Queensland Radium Institute sub-centre. In 1975 Dr Olsen recognised the need for more support services and rehabilitation facilities in the Queensland Health Department for the care of the patients with malignant disease and with the help of the Holland Park Lions Club in Brisbane established the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland. This has continued for nearly 26 years and is now a major support organisation and fund raising service for the care of patients with leukaemia and allied blood diseases in Queensland. Dr Olsen has previously held the positions of Medical Advisor and President of the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland. In 1977 he established with the Holy Spirit Hospital the first Day Care Unit in Queensland for the outpatient management of patients on treatment for malignant disease and in 1980 was appointed to the Queensland Cancer Fund Medical Advisory Committee and made a member of their Research Granting Committee. Dr Olsen has had great success in securing funding from numerous bodies and has approximately twenty-five published articles and papers on various aspects of Haematology and Oncology including original research carried out on megakaryocyte proliferation under conditions of stress. His current appointments include Honorary Clinical Haematologist at Royal Brisbane Hospital, Clinical Haematologist and Physician in Oncology in private practice based primarily at HOCA’s Wesley Clinic for Haematology and Oncology - a privately run Day Hospital for treatment of haematological and oncological disorders and an accredited consultant physician to St Andrews Hospital, Holy Spirit Hospital and the Wesley Hospital.
