Maryanne Hargraves is the HOCA Acting CEO and General Manager Clinical Governance & Organisational Learning.
Maryanne has a BSc (Nursing) from Monash University and an MBA (Hons) from Griffith University and was recently appointed as Adjunct Associate Professor, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Queensland University of Technology.
Maryanne was an inaugural member of the nursing team when HOCA was first established in 1988. Maryanne was involved in the development of innovative patient care models and nursing education programs to manage oncology patients in a day only setting. These programs removed the need for patients to spend weeks to months in an inpatient setting. At that time this was a first for both Queensland and Australia.
Maryanne is passionate about providing quality care and improving patient outcomes. She leads a dedicated team who are committed to caring for people with cancer and providing support for their families.
Prior to joining HOCA, Maryanne gained extensive experience in a broad range of cancer settings in Australia and the United Kingdom. Maryanne's knowledge and skills have been acknowledged through her active involvement in the professional development of nurses and presentations at National and International Conferences. She is a member of the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia, the Oncology Nurses Group, Brisbane and contributed to the development of safe handling guidelines for cytotoxic drugs for Queensland in 1997 and the updated guidelines in 2008. Maryanne has broad experience in cancer nursing research and has secured several large research grants to allow HOCA to better understand the patient experience of cancer and to improve patient outcomes.
Maryanne's community commitments include:
- appointed to the Leukaemia Foundation Board in 2007 and currently Board Secretary
- Chairperson/Coordinator of the Cancer Nurses Society Winter Congress Planning and Development Committee
- Member of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Sub Committee of the Cancer Council Queensland
